Visual Weather Observations
Introduction
The CSP Visual Weather Observation Log, administered by the University of Wisconsin–Madison group,
gives a basic visual observation record of meteorological conditions encountered during the Combined
Sensor Program cruise.
Archive Information
The weather observation data originated as Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows files. Your browser may have trouble downloading these files correctly; if so, you may need to use ftp to retrieve the files. For access outside SSEC, contact Brian Osborne at briano@ssec.wisc.edu. The native Excel spreadsheets are available in two formats:
- Daily spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows, 100kB each). This version is
the most complete, including comments, daily averages and confidences for each parameter, compass point
evaluation for quadrant numbers (see below), both alpha-numeric and numeric-only versions of the data,
and includes formatting to facilitate interpretation.
- One single, entire cruise spreadsheet (Excel, 310kB), useful for assessing trends in
parameters over periods of longer than a day. This file excludes some of the features of the above.
Also available on request are daily printouts (one day per page) including the important sections of
individual spreadsheets, (including daily averages), providing a quick, ready reference. Note that because of
the relatively large size of the Excel files, printing an entire set can be time-consuming — photocopied sets
are available from the address below.
Available as ASCII text is the Total Cloud Cover Data which gives total sky cloud cover as a percentage for the duration of the cruise.
A full description of the information included in the weather observation database is
available here.
